White whale tail a fluke

After ten years of whale watching along the coast of WA, Dave and Fiona Harvey thought they had seen it all.

But the marine conservationists were in for a surprise when they spotted an unusual humpback whale calf in Geographe Bay.

“It had a very unusually coloured tail, with complete white both on the top of its fluke as well as underneath,” Mrs Harvey said.

“I couldn’t take photos fast enough. We’ve seen some unusual sights before but never this.

“We are volunteers involved with whale and dolphin research and the owners of Legend Charters kindly let us go on their boat, so we could record and pass on data to various research bodies.”
