A Balingup photographer has been awarded both the Book of the Year and Australian Book of the Year awards at the 36th Annual Galley Club Publishing Awards.

Sam Harris was recently notified that his photographic book Postcards From Home had become the first self-published, digitally printed book to win either of the awards.

“It is a really big deal for print-on-demand publications and Momento Pro, the company who printed the book,” Mr Harris said.

“We were up against international publishing houses like Penguin, Thames & Hudson, Random House and others.”

He said the book was a collection of photos documenting his family life in Balingup, especially his two young daughters Uma and Yali. He was amazed to be even short-listed.

“It’s all kind of spontaneous – it evolves around certain special moments or quite normal, random moments when suddenly the light works for a shot,” he said.

Mr Harris also teaches photography and bookings are open for a workshop in Bali.
