Chamber looks to secure future of city

Now's the time to secure Bunbury’s future.

That was the message from the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries which yesterday called on the State Government to immediately relocate a Government department to Bunbury.

The chamber this week launched the campaign — ‘Now’s the Time to Secure Bunbury’s Future’ — to pressure the Government on the issue and said the CBD was an ideal location for a department office.

Chamber president Steve Down said the chamber had met with Bunbury MLA John Castrilli who proffered a commitment by Premier Colin Barnett toincrementally grow an agency in suburban Bunbury.

‘‘The Premier committed to the chamber to deliver anincrementally growing agency in Bunbury as a second-term project, however we are telling the Government that now’s the time to commit to actually relocating a department or substantial component of a department to the Bunbury CBD,’’ Mr Down said.

He said the chamber recognised Opposition Leader Mark McGowan had committed to move the Department of Regional Development and 240 public servants to Bunbury if Labor won the next State election.

‘‘There is the opportunity for more than 200 staff and their families to immediately impact Bunbury’s economy, not to mention the obvious flow-on economic benefits for Bunbury and the broader South West,’’ Mr Down said.

‘‘The chamber also believes the Bunbury CBD is where such an agency should belocated — the CBD needs investing in and such an investment would make an immediate positive impact on its health.’’

Mr Down said Bunbury had the capacity for such a population increase and, as a bonus, housing prices were much lower than in Perth.

‘‘We are calling on citizens of Bunbury, and indeed the broader South West, to tell the Government that now’s the time to honour its commitment to Bunbury and to secure its future by re-locating a department,’’ Mr Down said.
