Principal nominated for dedication
Manea Senior College principal Paul Mathews, with school captains Erica Perry and Britt Fisher, has been named as a semi-finalist in the Department of Education’s Secondary School Principal of the Year award.

Manea Senior College principal Paul Mathews has been named as a semi-finalist for the Department of Education’s Secondary School Principal of the Year award.

A staff member nominated Mr Mathews and it was confirmed with the college board before being submitted. ‘‘This is very humbling, and I see this as recognition of the fantastic college we have here,’’ Mr Mathews said.

‘‘This nomination is as much about the college as it is about me.’’

Mr Mathews said he was surprised by the nomination, adding he did not go into education to receive personal accolades.

‘‘This is a wonderful initiative of the Department of Education, acknowledging all those involved in public education, he said.

Principal since the College opened in 2009, Mr Mathews prides himself on building relationships with the students and the school community.

‘‘It’s really important that a principal is involved in connecting with and educating the students,’’ he said.

College captains Erica Perry and Britt Fisher said Mr Mathews’ dedication was shown in the fact he knew all the students’ names.

‘‘He also sat down with each of the Year 12s to help us make goals and keep us motivated,’’ Erica said.

Britt said, ‘‘He has gone above and beyond what is required of a principal, he’s definitely outstanding.’’

The winner of the Secondary School Principal of the Year will be announced in December.
