Burns leader relfects on bombing tragedy

WA burns expert Dr Fiona Wood will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bali Bombing in Bunbury next month.

The 2005 Australian of the Year will speak at a Rotary in Bunbury dinner on October 12 at the Quality Lord Forrest Hotel.

Dr Wood was thrust into the world media spotlight in 2002 when 28 victims of the Bali bombings were flown to Perth to receive emergency burns treatment.

It was during this time the ‘‘spray-on skin’’ cell technology Dr Wood pioneered for use in treating burns victims grabbed international headlines.

She was awarded the Order of Australia medal for her work with the victims.

Rotary member Rod Downe said the organisation aimed to bring icons or major personalities to Bunbury to speak on a matter of community importance.

‘‘When we were thinking about a gripping topic we realised the anniversary for the bombings was coming up and approached Dr Wood to speak,’’ he said.

‘‘Dr Wood is a dynamic woman and will speak at a national function in Canberra commemorating the bombings before she flies to Bunbury for the dinner.’’

Dr Wood is the director of the Burns Service of WA, working at Royal Perth and Princess Margaret hospitals and heads the Fiona Wood Foundation.

October 12 will mark a decade since the terrorist attack in Bali that claimed 202 lives and injured 309 others.

Tickets for the dinner are $60 a head, with $10 going to The Fiona Wood Foundation.

To buy tickets contact Mr Downe on 9791 9775.
