November start for shark patrols

Aerial shark patrols in the South West are set to start in November, despite earlier reports suggesting the patrols would start on weekends in September.

Surf Life Saving WA beach services co-ordinator Matt Du Plessis told the Times they would have liked to start earlier, however it had been dependent on funding.

The daily patrols will fly from 7am to 5pm from Monday, November 19 to Thursday, February 3.

But Mr Du Plessis said the helicopter would have a wider range of services this year, as the crew received increased training in rescue capabilities.

“Last year it was purely surveillance but now we can perform rescues, which will also help in cases of drowning or people caught in rips or rock fisherman being swept out,” he said.

The helicopter will also allow quick responses to remote areas in cases of emergency.

Mr Du Plessis said the crew would continue to draw on local knowledge and surf conditions to decide where to patrol each day.
