Wine Master in judge job

Two top international judges have been signed on to taste the region’s best drops at this year’s Margaret River Wine Show.

Margaret River Wine Industry Association vice president Stuart Watson revealed the show had secured the services of the UK’s Steven Spurrier and Master of Wine Lisa Perotti-Brown from Hong Kong.

Mr Spurrier is most famous for organising the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 which promoted the expansion of wine production in the new world and was depicted in the movie Bottleshock.

He is also the founder of the Academie du Vin and Christie’s Wine Course in addition to authoring and co-authoring several wine books.

Two new Australian judges, Wynn’s winemaker Sue Hodder and wine retailer Richard Moore, will make their debut at the show and will join a cast of returning tasters including Hilton Sydney’s Kick Bickley, wine journalist Jane Faulkner, independent winemaker Dave Longden and Houghton Wines’ Ross Pamment.

Mr Watson said the Margaret River Wine Industry Association was trying to co-ordinate next year’s annual wine show awards dinner and presentation evening with the 2013 Margaret River Gourmet Escape.

Judging for this year’s event will take place on November 27 and 28 at the Margaret River Education Campus and the exhibitor tastings will follow on Thursday, November 29.

Xanadu's reserve the best drop

Xanadu Wines’ 2010 Margaret River reserve chardonnay has been hailed as Australia’s best drop by a panel of international judges in Sydney last week.

Five of the world’s most respected wine judges, Chile’s Eduardo Brethauer, South Africa’s Michael Fridjhon, Argentina’s Fabricio Portelli, New Zealand’s Bob Campbell and Australian Huon Hooke bunkered down in a tasting base in Concord to determine the best drops from their respective countries.

Each judge nominated their favourite wines from their homeland for the competition.

Students wrap up vintage

Curtin University’s second year wine production students wrapped up another vintage last week thanks to fruit donations from a number of local wineries.

Students produced a mix of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon drops this year and their produce was assessed by Lenton Brae Estate’s Ed Tomlinson and McHenry Hohnen Vintners’ Ryan Walsh.

After being open seven days a week for more than 11 years, Wino’s are finally taking a break.

So just to rub it in, these reviews are now coming from up north where the weather is warm, the wines are cold, and the cares are forgotten.

In keeping with the summer vibe, I’ve brought a few of the whites to look at.

Chilled by the barbie should be just the ticket to see how they go.

The first is the Windows Estate semillon sauvignon blanc 2010. Being Margaret River-based, I get to see a truck load of these wines, and reviews on them can be pretty repetitive, but I just don’t tire of looking at a good SSB.

It’s such a refreshing and congenial wine. Especially when sitting by a pool on a 28 degree day.

Did I mention how lovely it is up here?

It’s got a classic SSB nose with the “greener” end of the fruit spectrum literally leaping out of the glass.

By greener we normally mean characters like snow peas, granny smith apples, kiwi fruit, tomato leaf, lemon grass and gooseberry.

At the moment this wine is ice cold, so the palate is as refreshing as skinny dipping in July.

This chill enhances the clean crisp fruit and keeps the finish racy and tight with that puckering grapefruit pith to clean it up.
