Shutterbug captures memories

With the precise click of a button, 27-year-old Jes Risk captures everlasting memories for couples on their big day.

The Port Kennedy mother-of-two said it was the simple things in life that motivated her natural style of photography.

‘‘I get inspired by everyday things, just watching people and how people interact,’’ she said.

‘‘I am more of a natural photographer.

I like to get people around the camera and I like to just snap away.’’

A portrait and wedding photographer, Mrs Risk said photography had always been a part of her life, but it wasn’t until her early 20s that she decided to pursue a career in the industry.

‘‘I have always liked taking photos,’’ she said.

‘‘We’ve got hundreds of photo albums.

We have a huge family so there were always lots of opportunities to take photos.’’

During high school Mrs Risk did a photography class based on old film techniques, but did not pursue any further study in the subject.

‘‘I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in high school,’’ she said.

‘‘I originally did work experience in childcare and I hated it.’’

After high school Mrs Risk said she worked at Bunnings for a number of years before starting out as an amateur wedding photographer with her sister, who worked as a make-up artist.

Mrs Risk said it was her family that truly reignited her interest in photography and sent her on the path to creating her own business.

‘‘I have about 12 cousins and we did a big cousins photo shoot,’’ she said.

‘‘That was the moment when I wanted to full-on start working in photography.’’

Now, after working in the industry for five years and running her own business

for two, Mrs Risk said she still got the jitters before a job.

‘‘I get super nervous a couple of days before a wedding shoot, but on the morning when I get there and I’m chatting with the bride it just comes natural and I just start clicking away, ’’ she said.

Mrs Risk said her job had its challenges but mostly it was a lot of fun.

‘‘Attending all the different weddings is great—they are super fun and you meet so many different people,’’ she said.

Mrs Risk said she still had a few things on her to-do list, including pursuing her interest in landscape photography, continuing to build up her business, studying photography and travelling the world.

‘‘I just want to go everywhere—I have always wanted to go places,’’ she said.

Until then, Mrs Risk said she would continue to live by the saying, carpe diem.

‘‘It means seize the day,’’ she said.
