Students answer Defence call
Three Comet Bay College students have taken the first step towards a career with the Australian Defence Force after being awarded special technical scholarships this week.
Navy Commander Brian Chase was on hand to present Ethan Pugh, Elliot Barnard and Lewis Robinson with the $3000 scholarships which are designed to assist students starting a technical trade with the ADF.
More than 2300 students in Years 11 and 12 across Australia applied for the scholarships.
As part of the application process, each student was required to explain why they are interested in a trade with the ADF.
Comet Bay defence transition mentor Claire Hunt said the program was proving popular with the school’s senior students.
‘‘We had six kids apply and three of them were awarded,’’ Ms Hunt said.
‘‘A lot of schools missed out so we’re pretty lucky.
‘‘It’s aimed at supporting the kids who are looking at getting a technical trade in the Defence Force rather than wanting to be an officer or in the general army.
‘‘We’ve got quite a lot of kids who are interested in Defence jobs as well.’’
Elliot and Lewis have their sights set on beginning electronics technician trades, while Ethan is hoping to become a marine technician.
It is the first time students from Comet Bay College have been awarded the scholarships.
