Saracens solders on

Saracen Estates and Duckstein Brewery are not for sale, according to director Maree Saraceni, who slammed contrary media reports this week.

“Unfortunately, the 40ha vineyard property and buildings are up for sale – that property was owned by one of our companies, Newport Securities Pty Ltd, which was put into receivership in January 2011 due to the Raine Square receivership,” Mrs Saraceni told the Times.

She said neither Saracen Estates or Duckstein Brewery were in receivership and a new six-year lease was signed on June 1 to permit sale of the property while allowing the businesses to continue. \

Ferrier Hodgson’s Martin Jones has asked Landmark Harcourts and VNW Independent to try to sell the Caves Road property.

Mr Jones and his team were appointed receivers and managers of the Saracen Estates property in January last year at the request of Mr Saraceni’s financier, Bankwest.

“I am, as is Luke, very upset at the sale by Bankwest of another of our hard-earned assets. We continue to work on the litigation and damages claim against Bankwest on the Raine Square receivership and know that the writ will be lodged very soon,” she said.

Mrs Saraceni said there were no plans to sell either business, which she hoped would continue “to be a part of and a force in the Margaret River wine and tourism region for the foreseeable future”.

The Saracenis’ property sale comes amid an extended downturn for the local wine industry, with a number of prominent wineries and vineyards for sale in the region.

Mrs Saraceni said keeping a winery or brewery afloat required “great passion and deep pockets,” but businesses would win out eventually.

“Saracen Estates and Duckstein Brewery have forged ahead creating award-winning wines and craft beers, as well as creating the first combined cellar door-microbrewery in the region,” she said.

“There are now, of course, others who have followed in our groundbreaking footsteps within the region and we intend to continue with great passion and deep pockets to investigate and create new ways of making Saracen Estates and the Duckstein Brewery an iconic cellar door, microbrewery and restaurant.

“We intend for our facility to continue to be a must-go destination within the region.”
