Double pain for luckless Flames
Trent Gerovich eludes two Kalamunda opponents in last weekend’s match.

The Rockingham Flames remain at the foot of the State Basketball League standings after slumping to consecutive defeats against Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Perry Lakes Hawks at the weekend.

The double-header round represented an opportunity for Rockingham to finally break their 10-game losing streak — an unenviable record dating back to April.

However, any optimism gained from the previous weekend’s narrow loss to East Perth was quickly extinguished by a much-improved Kalamunda on Friday.

The Suns, who are undefeated in their past three matches, led at every change en route to a 126-97 win at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, Rockingham gave a solid account of themselves early and trailed by 11 points at half-time. Led by American import Greg Palmer, Kalamunda piled on 65-47 in the second half to emerge comfortable winners. The Suns’ dominance was highlighted by 70 rebounds to 38.

Palmer led all scorers with 27 points, while Jake Amos (18 points), James Booyer (17) and Trent Gerovich (14) were Rockingham’s best.

The Flames travelled to seventh-placed Perry Lakes on Saturday, but returned to Rockingham empty-handed after lowering their colours by 31 points, 130-99.

Again it was the Hawks’ import players doing the bulk of the damage, with Americans Matt Rosinski and Shane Ross combining for 67 points.

Ross was particularly damaging inside the key, hitting 17 of 24 field goals and helping Perry Lakes establish a 28-point half-time lead.

Rockingham rallied in third term, outscoring the home side by six points.

However, the damage had already been done, leaving the Flames to rue a 12th straight loss.

It was also the 13th consecutive match in which Rockingham had conceded more than 100 points.

Percell Coles and Booyer netted 24 apiece for the Flames.

Things don’t get any easier for Rockingham this weekend with arguably the competition’s toughest road trip against ninth-placed Goldfields.
