Blackwood eateries vie for sweet success
Award hopefuls Toni and Roger Purnell with staff Nicole Bailey and Natasha Viles.

Two Warren Blackwood eateries are in the running to win Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Association awards for excellence.

Bridgetown’s Emporium Bistro has been named as a finalist in the awards along with Pemberton’s Millhouse Cafe.

Roger and Toni Purnell, who own the Emporium, hope being part of the awards will help put their business, and Bridgetown, on the map as a fine dining destination.

'Just to be a finalist is exciting — if we got something it would be good for Bridgetown. It’s not just about us,’’ Mrs Purnell said.

The Emporium is a regional finalist in two divisions: best contemporary Australian restaurant and best tourism restaurant.

Vying against the Bridgetown business are bigger names including Margaret River’s Settlers Tavern and Mojo’s in Bunbury.

The Millhouse Cafe´ was nominated in the best breakfast restaurant and best cafe´ restaurant categories.

Mrs Purnell said entrants were assessed by judges who visit each business anonymously and award points on everything from the cutlery and service to music and food.

The State winners will be announced at a gala ball at the Burswood in Perth on August 20, and go on to compete at a national level.
