Deckchair cinema to launch Busselton festival

Next year’s Festival of Busselton will be held from January 8 to 19, with a deckchair cinema in Dunsborough to begin the celebrations.

The festival committee has released details for the 2013 event, which will be the 49th Festival of Busselton and follow the successful format of the past few years.

Returning highlights include the Young Ambassador competition, for which entrants are currently being sought, training ship STS Leewin II and the Pirates Competition, and Petticoat Lane.

There will be three free deckchair cinemas throughout the celebrations and it is hoped a skydiving display, marine flare display and aerial firefighting demonstration can be arranged to follow the Children's Treasure Hunt on January 19.

The festival will finish with the Closing Night Concert, featuring a well-known band, the winners of the Young Ambassador competition and a fireworks display.

The festival committee has three new members and is hoping to organise new events to be held in Dunsborough and a Facebook page to keep residents up to date.

However, festival president Bernie Masters said volunteers were still needed to take on a number of tasks, including the creation of a new Festival Spirit to be burnt on closing night.

"We were very grateful to Women Supporting Women for preparing the Spirit for last January's Festival, but they'd like to focus on different activities over the next few months," Mr Masters said.

"We're hoping an active community group can come forward and design a new, smaller, more portable Spirit to be made from paper mache and old cloths.

We're also looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Pirates Competition. This task only requires someone to be on the jetty for a few hours on the morning of the competition to direct and manage people and children as they arrive at the Leeuwin."
