Signals at WA’s first roundabout controlled by traffic lights will be modified to accommodate motorists heading back to Perth after the WA Day long weekend.

The special phase will allow motorists on the Eelup roundabout, on the outskirts of Bunbury, to turn into the Australind Bypass in one movement, rather than two, and in two lanes.

Traffic lights have been installed at the roundabout, which had 689 accidents in the five years to the end of last year.

Four sets of traffic lights have been installed and a $1.7 million slip lane has been built to allow southbound traffic to avoid the roundabout, which carries about 40,000 vehicles every day.

“A special traffic signal phase will cater for the high traffic volumes expected when people travel back to Perth after this weekend and all future long weekends,” Transport Minister Troy Buswell said.
