Cycling: Swiss timing sweeps Deisel into second

New riders helped make up a 50-strong field for the Peel District Cycling Club’s criterium event held at Smeaton Way on Sunday morning.

Once again, there was a shortage of A-Grade riders and the three who did turn up shifted to B-Grade, which made a tough race for the everyone concerned.

Visiting Swiss rider Loric Perizzolo teamed up with Phil Deisel to form a breakaway some 500 metres ahead of the group.

Perizzolo and Deisel held this for eight laps and with two laps to go, the Swiss rider rode away from Deisel to take first place.

Deisel took second with Mark Roberts third, making it 1, 2 and 3 for the A-Graders.

The C-Grade event was fast, with a group of four getting away from the remainder of the riders and storming to a fast finish, taken by Anthony Wishart from Ian Watson, Adam Farrell and Andrew Brown.

The D-Grade event was spoiled by a touching of wheels just as the finishing sprint was winding up.

Several riders went down, with one carted off to hospital with what is thought to be a shoulder injury.

Paul Taylor won the event from David Porter and Tom Power.

The E-Grade event went to Dave Simmons, giving him enough wins to go up to D-Grade next week.

Simmons won clearly from Rob Ramirez and Kyle Rattrey, who were just 0.01 of a second behind.
