Drivers are doing a double-take after seeing the flash of yellow that is Safety Bay man Harry Jackson on his Boom Mustang ST1 Thunderbird automatic trike.

Mr Jackson became the first man to own this model of automatic trike in WA this year when his wife decided it would make a perfect gift for his 64th birthday.

Originally from Belfast, Mr Jackson said he had always ridden motorbikes because of the feeling of freedom and low cost but, as he grew older, his eye had turned towards the trike.

"It is very stable, other people on the road can see you, and they're more comfortable," he said.

"It is just the looks of it too - you get noticed, you really get noticed."

Waiting two years for the specially made German Boom Mustang ST1 Thunderbird trike to be made in automatic, Mr Jackson said it was definitely worth it.

Weighing in at 590kg, the trike has a liquid-cooled in-line four-cylinder, four-valve Peugeot engine matched to a four-speed automatic transmission with sports mode and 103kW of power.

Mr Jackson said the trike's speed and control were impressive.

"It offers comfort and lots of freedom," he said.

"It is hard to explain, you have to be on it to really feel what it's like."

Mr Jackson said he hoped to do a charity ride on the trike at a later date.
