Emus claw out win

Bombers’ Bart Djiagween.

Bidyadanga Emus gave fans a stellar victory when they knocked Cable Beach off their pedestal on their home turf to reach the top of the ladder during round 6 of the West Kimberley Football League.

Players gave spectators a riveting performance as they went head-to-head in the fiercely contested nailbiter, but Emus came out on top with a 13.7 (85) to 10.9 (69) win.

The game heralded more than just an exciting win for the Emus, it marked a return of football to the Bidyadanga community after more than a decade's absence.

Bidyadanga assistant coach Andy Henshaw said it was fantastic to see the sport back in the community and witness a tough clash between the teams at the top of the table.

"I couldn't be more rapt for the boys with the way they played and performed," he said.

"It was a sensational effort against last year's premiers."

However, Henshaw said the victory was not something the boys would take for granted.

"The job's not done," he said.

"We're taking it week by week."

Cable Beach president Jay Cassidy said he was pleased with his team's efforts on the field.

"Our players performed well," he said.

"It was an intensely high-pressured game."

While Cable Beach showed control and domination during the match, Cassidy said a few mistakes allowed the Emus back into the game.

Although it was not the result he was hoping for, Cassidy said the outcome was well-deserved for the Emus and a bonus to see football back in Bidyadanga.
