Road plan gets $300,000 fund
Plans to link Dampier Terrace with Frederick Street in Broome and build a lookout close to where the two points connect have been bolstered by a $300,000 grant.
The Federal/State funding has prompted the Shire of Broome to bring its own $300,000 contribution forward immediately rather than from borrowings in 2015-16.
Conditions of the funding administered through Tourism WA are that work must commence before the end of the 2014-15 financial year and that matching money must be secured.
Shire officers will recommend to councillors at the ordinary council meeting on June 2 to release the $300,000 for the project this financial year, allowing for the road component to progress.
The funding would also allow tender documentation for the lookout to progress, which would move forward if and when the $10 million promised by the State Government for the Chinatown revitalisation funding becomes available.
Broome Shire president Graeme Campbell said he was delighted with the funding confirmation.
"The selection of Broome as one of three recipients in WA is appreciated as it will enable the commencement of this important project," Mr Campbell said.
"It has previously been announced the Frederick Street extension and the lookout form a part of the Chinatown revitalisation project.
"This latest round of successful funding has allowed us to bring the project forward."
