Course keeps youngsters on the move

Kununurra youngsters can roll and tumble their way through new KinderGym-style classes run by the town's gymnastics club coach Beck Foulkes-Taylor.

NacNics launched this month for children under five years, who can attend with a caregiver and take part in a range of multi-sensory, movement-based activities.

Foulkes-Taylor is the only accredited KinderGym coach in Kununurra.

She said the program's genesis lay with a group of parents who suggested the idea to her while out for coffee one day.

The program's name came from a local child, Evie Farley, who at two years old could not quite say gymnastics, instead calling it NacNics, which Foulkes-Taylor said "just stuck".

"NacNics in Kununurra ensures that children are encouraged to develop and learn through play and movement, a vital part of a child's development," she said.

"The program is for children five years and under, and their caregiver, in a safe, structured, multi-sensory environment which aims to develop the child socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically."

Evie's mother, Abby Murray, said there was "definitely a gap in the market for physical activities for children under five".

NacNics runs three sessions on a Thursday at the Kununurra Leisure Centre.

Children aged one to two years are invited to a 45-minute session at 9am, followed by a session for two to three-year-olds at 10am, before an hour-long session for four to five-year-olds at 10.45am.
