Freeman honour for Aboriginal advocate

Former Hedland mayor Bob Neville has been awarded the highest traditional honour by the Town of Port Hedland after spending 40 years advocating for Aboriginal causes.

Mr Neville said he was “blown away” to be recognised and dedicated his honorary Freeman of the District of Port Hedland award to the community.

“Community is a great thing and I think there has been a huge amount of forward movement in the reconciliation with Aboriginal people in this community over the years,” he said.

“But there’s still a long way to go with ensuring Aboriginal people are on an equal footing with the rest of the community.”

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said the former chief executive of Bloodwood Tree Association had tackled many issues in the community including domestic violence and homelessness.

She said Mr Neville also played an instrumental role in establishing and founding multiple not-for-profit organisations and community development programs including the Youth Involvement Council and the Pilbara Regional Council.
