Strong field lines up for first meet of the year
While the electronic sounds of Gossip Festival were happening on one side of the Dampier Archipelago, the deep bellow of sprint cars filled the night sky on the other side.
Plenty of competitors lined up at Nickol Bay Speedway's first club meet to take part in sprint car, wingless, juniors and stock races, as well as burn outs between heats.
Speedway president John Magerl said he was impressed with some of the new talent after taking line honours in the feature race.
"Some of the new drivers did very well and it was good to see the new female contingent out there," he said.
"We're looking for some motorbike riders if they would like to come do some flat track riding next meet too."
Magerl said burn outs between heats would be an ongoing thing, with both crews looking to support each other more this season.
First-time wingless driver Troy O'Keefe notched a few wins, but an error in the feature race cost him the points.
"It was awesome," he said.
"The only problem was the loose nut behind the wheel who stuffed the last race but hey, it's all learning."
Ben Maes took out the wingless feature category in a tight tussle.
Matt Herbert picked up where he left off last season, pipping Matt Robbo and Brian Herbert for the win in the street stocks. Dave Sandon and Steve Lewis followed up Magerl in the sprint cars.
Toni and Megan Couper continued their tussle in the juniors, with Toni taking the points in the first meet.
The next meet will not be until June, with North West Championships to be held in Carnarvon at the end of the month.
