The Karratha and sub-districts RSL has donated $7000 to Legacy Australia from proceeds raised at its Anzac Day stall and function last month.

For more than 80 years, Legacy Australia has dedicated itself to the welfare and support of the widows and children of deceased war veterans, and is pledged to continue this vital role well into this century.

Karratha RSL secretary Rob Trieb said they were committed to raising funds required to meet Legacy's commitment to its members.

"Legacy currently have registered more than 7000 widows and widowers, as well as 50 children, students and disabled dependants and with current enrolments averaging 10 a week, the work of Legacy will be needed for many decades to come," he said.

"We fundraise for this worthy cause through various functions such as our regular Anzac Day and Remembrance Day stalls, and the Anzac Day function hosted at the RSL.

"Fundraising this year came via a committee-run raffle, APEX run 2-UP ring and the generous donations of patrons depositing much needed funds in our donation tins throughout Anzac Day and in total Karratha RSL is proud to donate to Legacy $7180."

Karratha RSL president Julie Pope presented the donation to Terry and Sonya Byrne, who accepted the donation on behalf of Legacy WA earlier this month.

Mrs Byrne thanked the RSL and the local community for their generosity.

"This donation is a true indication that Anzac day is an occasion that unites all Australians, even in a remote locality such as the community of Karratha/Dampier," she said.

Mrs Pope said the success of the Anzac Day fundraisers would not have been possible without support from community groups APEX, the Red Dog 4WD Club, Karratha Water Polo Association and Karratha Autumn Club.

"In reality, the donation comes from the fantastic community of Karratha, who on the 100th year of the landing at Gallipoli, stood together and commemorated the memory of our countrymen with great respect," she said.
