Top two teams unbeaten

Bombers forward Zac Cox is tackled by Bidyadanga's Gerard Bennett.

Round 3 of the West Kimberley Football League saw Looma and Bidyadanga maintain their 100 per cent records, while Cable Beach picked up a last-gasp win in Derby and Towns got off the mark.

The action started last Friday night, with Towns picking up a morale-boosting 11.22 (88) to 5.1 (31) win over cross-town rivals Broome Saints.

After a hectic first 20 minutes, the defeated side actually held a slender lead, but Towns' youthful exuberance took hold in the second quarter.

Midfield lynchpin and captain Rhonen Maher was critical in his side's triumph, inspiring those around him and kicking five goals in the process. George Liddiard put in a commanding performance in the Towns backline, while Ash Spowart dominated the ruck.

John Bin Sulaiman and Jeffrey Fong were the best on ground for Saints, who have lost all three games so far and look lacking in experience.

Towns FC life member Andrew Blackley told the Broome Advertiser he was delighted with his team's first win of 2015.

"The boys played well and kept their structures in the game," he said.

"It was good to see the guys singing the victory song and we are looking forward to testing ourselves against Bidyadanga this weekend."

On Saturday Bidyadanga Emus and Peninsula Bombers put on a compelling showing at Haynes Oval, with the former winning an end-to-end affair 10.11 (71) to 7.10 (52).

Both sides entered the clash having won their first two games, but the Emus stole the four points with a strong showing in the final 20.

The team kicking towards the Frederick Street end seemed to have the advantage in the first three quarters, with the lead changing hands.

However, Bidyadanga bucked the trend with three unanswered goals in the final 20, kicking the other way, which decided the game in their favour.

Timmy Cox threatened to inspire his much-improved Bombers side to victory with a number of spectacular marks in the forward line and was unlucky to end up on the losing team.

His battle with Kamahl Bamba down the flank in the second half made for compelling viewing.

Bidyadanga's collective spirit, forged by coaches Regan Bloomer and Andy Henshaw, sees the community side as a driving force in the competition.

The illusive Brenton Bangu's pace in the Emus' forward line made up for the absence of Isiah Stevens, while Ronald Yanawana continues to impress on a weekly basis.

Later that day, Looma Eagles maintained their perfect 2015 record with a 13.10 (88) to 9.8 (62) win over an improved Broome Bulls.

The community side welcomed Lewis Broome back to the fold and looked to compound Bulls' hefty defeat to Cable Beach the week before.

However, the Broome-based side, driven forward by the exceptional Hayden McLeod, put in an encouraging performance to give the Eagles a scare, despite defeat.

A strong third quarter tipped the game in Looma's favour, while a number of their younger players stood up and were counted.

Finally, Cable Beach hit the road to face old foes Derby Tigers, with a late flurry of goals giving them a 12.10 (82) to 10.6 (66) victory in a tight encounter.

The lead changed hands on a number of occasions, with the hosts having a slender advantage at half-time and entering the final stanza 10 points to the good.

However, the premiers showed their fortitude with a number of majors in the final 10 minutes to claim the four points.

Beach welcomed back experienced campaigner Jo Dann but were missing a host of key midfielders, with Gerrick Weedon and Wade Wungudin running the game for the Tigers as a result.

CJ Oakley stepped up to put in a best-on-ground showing for the visitors, while Daniel Cox continued a strong start.

Cable Beach president Jay Cassidy was glad his team ended up on the right side of the scoreline.

"It is always hard travelling to Derby and their regular midfield rotations made it hard for us - we are really happy to have won," he told the Broome Advertiser.

This weekend sees Derby make the trip to Looma in a mouth-watering clash, while Bidyadanga will face Towns at Haynes Oval on Saturday.

The Bombers' mettle will be tested as they take on Cable Beach, while winless pair Saints and Bulls do battle for an invaluable four points.
