Marina plan forges ahead

The Town of Port Hedland has welcomed the inclusion in last week's State Budget of an initial $72 million for the Spoilbank marina as it looks to ensure the sums behind the project add up.

With the Town voting last week to build the marina at the Spoilbank rather than Cooke Point, it now has a green light to push ahead with a business case for the project.

Currently, it has $40 million held in reserve for the waterfront development, while the State Government is expected to chip in $112 million. But with a leaked preliminary costing obtained by the Telegraph last month estimating the project would cost $213 million, the business case findings have the potential to make or break the project.

Chief executive Mal Osborne said it would thoroughly explore risks from potential funding shortfalls.

"The business case will identify anticipated costs and expenditure, preferred concepts for the staged development and consideration of how potential risks will be mitigated," he said.

"Once endorsed by (the) council for distribution, the business case will be open for public submissions."

Progress on the business case comes as the marina also faces possible hurdles arising from potential dust and environmental concerns and conflict between iron ore carriers in the main shipping channel and recreational boats using the marina.

Mr Osborne remained upbeat and said the marina and waterfront development could earn big dollars, attracting tourists and servicing boats working in Hedland's port.

"This project will be a game-changer for our community, opening Port Hedland up for economic diversification and showcasing our stunning waterfront," he said.

"Where else in the world will you be able to overlook the biggest tonnage port, count ship movements and see ore head out to the horizon.

"Just some examples (of its potential economic benefits) are using the marina as a hub for water-based activities, such as a safe berth for commercial boats and servicing facilities and … tourism opportunities with fishing charter boat tours.

"This is on top of food and beverage, retail, events spaces and a safe swimming lagoon."
