Lachlan bound for world event

Broome youngster Lachlan Bonner, 12, has been selected for the WA Country under-13 team to play in an international soccer competition in Thailand later this year.

Broome's brightest young soccer player is set to represent regional WA at an international competition later this year.

Lachlan Bonner, 12, has been selected in the WA Country under-13 squad that will travel to Phuket, Thailand in December.

The Kimberley teenager recently visited the State capital for a selection process and scored the opening goal in a scratch match against a Perth Glory youth team.

Lachlan plays as a striker and said Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo was his favourite player.

He has big ambitions and trains everyday in the hope of one day being a star of European soccer.

Broome Soccer Association coach Mike Doyle said Lachlan was a unique talent.

"There hasn't been a player with such raw potential and natural ability in the nine-year history of the Broome junior programs," he said.

"He is still quite young, but if he continues to work hard and learn the game, he could have a very bright career ahead of him."

BSA president Sarah Mullineux said Lachlan's recognition was a positive for the sport locally.

"He has been a stand-out young player in the local youth competition and being recognised for this talent has provided him an opportunity to progress further," she said.

"It is really exciting for the sport and for Broome to see young people like Lachie excelling at such a young age."
