Kununurra youth have celebrated National Youth Week by holding a fun day that raised money for people affected by cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.

Organised by Save the Children, the event held at the Kununurra Youth Hub offered children the chance to buy sausage sizzles and take part in games and activities for a $1 donation.

Save the Children Kimberley operation co-ordinator Victoria Baird said the group had decided to link the fundraising to National Youth Week because this year's theme was "it starts with us".

"Five or six years ago Save the Children organised for two local girls from Kununurra to go over to Vanuatu and obviously with the cyclone that's just happened, we thought it would be good to get involved in the fundraising because there is that connection," she said.

"We thought it would be good to get the kids involved with raising money for other kids in the world who are also in need and get them into that spirit of generosity and doing things for other people."

Activities on the day included badminton, painting boab nuts and playing on the foosball table.

Two young people involved, Isaiah Parks and Lawrence Cox, went on the radio earlier in the day to promote the event while other fundraising, including a disco, was held at the weekend.

Ms Baird said a Save the Children board member had pledged to match the donations the Kununurra children could collect and they were hoping for as much as possible.
