Eagles swoop to beat Blues in derby

Sean Burns knocks the ball out to Nic Cooper in Saturday's game.

Warmun Eagles have prevailed in their first local derby against rivals Bow River Blues, running away with the match after half- time to win 12.8 (80) to 7.5 (47).

The Blues were admitted to the East Kimberley Football League in 2014, but played in the southern division, with the Eagles competing in the north.

Friday night's match drew a large crowd despite being moved to Kununurra because the teams' shared home ground in Warmun was unavailable.

All matches scheduled for the oval this season were moved to alternative venues at this month's EKFL delegates' meeting because the ground was still too rough after recently being resurfaced.

On Saturday afternoon, Halls Creek Hawks asserted themselves as a dominant force this season, crushing Kununurra Demons in Kununurra by 106 points.

The Hawks never looked troubled running out 17.17 (119) to 2.1 (13) winners.

Waringarri Crows have continued their great start to the 2015 season, easily accounting for Port Wyndham Crocs 18.3 (111) to 7.10 (52) in Wyndham, while Yardgee Dockers were too strong for Kururrungku Roos, winning 11.9 (75) to 6.8 (44).

In the weekend's other match, Ord River Magpies overcame a slow start to post a 10-goal win against Wirramanu Tigers in hot conditions in Kununurra.

As temperatures hit 37C, the Tigers came out firing and matched the Magpies in the first quarter and a half before the home team opened up their advantage at the main break.

The gallant Tigers team did not drop their heads in the second half but lacked the firepower in front of goal to match the Magpies.

The competition's leading goal kicker from last season, Zac Baggs, booted four for the Magpies, while new addition to the forward line Jackson Forbes kicked three.

Defender Julien Stoldt, ruckman Ryan Frost and midfielder James Woodhouse all turned in good performances for the Magpies in the 11.16 (83) to 3.5 (23) win.

This weekend is a general bye for Anzac Day but round 3 of the EKFL will continue the week after, with Magpies hosting Crows on Friday night before a quadruple-header in Halls Creek on Saturday.

The Halls Creek matches will see the Blues take on the Hawks at noon, followed by the Dockers and Crocs at 2pm, Tigers and Demons at 4pm and Eagles and Roos at 6pm.

It will be the first time many teams have played each other after the competition was split last season to lessen the travel burden.
