Pilbara spots included in prestigious magazine list

The Burrup Peninsula has been included in a magazine's list of top Australian spots.

An Australian travel magazine has recognised three Pilbara spots in its top 100 amazing places in Australia "you haven't been to".

Making the Australian Traveller's list at 34 was the four-day Karijini Experience in Karijini National Gorge, as nominated by chef Mark Olive.

The annual event, started by the Pilbara Inland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is a smorgasbord with opera, yoga, cooking, astronomy, music and basket weaving in the setting of the national park.

This year's event runs from May 1 to 4.

Coming in at 87 is the Burrup Peninsula, one of the State's most recently created national parks, nominated by WA Ballet's principal artist Jayne Smeulders.

Smeulders was born in Karratha and remembers fondly the petroglyphs scattered throughout the peninsula.

The magazine highlights Deep Gorge as the spot to go on the Burrup, where there are more than 10,000 rock engravings.

Finally, at 89, is the Millstream-Chichester National Park.

Sydney Opera House contemporary music head Ben Marshall nominated the park, with Python Pool and Deep Reach Pool in mind.

Australian Traveller founder Quentin Long said with WA being the largest State in the country, he was not surprised there were so many places on the list from WA where Australians probably had not been yet.

"It will be controversial for a place like Rotto to make the list for locals, but remember, Eastern States Australians probably totally underestimate just how pristine and gorgeous it really is," he said.

"Perhaps West Australians should feel sorry for their Eastern States cousins, who don't have easy access to such a paradise."
