Waters on the rise

As the Broome pennant competition approaches its midway point, it is tight at the top of the table, with only a point separating the top two teams.

In matches played at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre last week, there were some great tussles in division 1, with two games going the distance into a fifth and deciding game.

Former club president Andrew Waters fired against the third-ranked Lincoln North, eventually coming out victorious after an epic battle, while little separated Glenn Bowman and Troy Bodle, who also put on a five-set exhibition.

Recent arrival to the club, Chris Baker, again showed he is a level above most players with a 3-0 win over Steve Dare.

It appears the loss of a solitary game to former club champion Neale Woodroffe the week before was only a momentary lapse in concentration.

In other divisions, Mark Durbridge proved his enduring fitness is second to none with a five-set win over Brendan Campbell, while the wily Geoff Evans proved too good for Chaz Gardiner in a gripping four-game encounter.

Meg Yates and Kelvin Shem have both hit a rich vein of form of late, with both victorious, and Seth Lovell opened his account for the season after being promoted to division 3 with a comprehensive win over Michael Leake.

In team standings, the Protectionists have nudged out Think Big at the top of the table, with The Trumps, Black Knights and Nimblefeet close on their heels.

The club is taking a two-week break over the school holidays.
