Dancers to take darkness in stride for Earth Hour

Passionate local food producer Bruno Dann will be one of the guest speakers at the No Lights, No Lycra Switch Off and Dance event on Saturday.

Dancing in the dark will be all the rage on Saturday when Broome holds a special community event to mark Earth Hour.

Now in its seventh year, Earth Hour is a universal grassroots movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature that aims to unite people to protect the planet.

This year's theme focuses on the impact of global warming on the country's food.

No Lights No Lycra has teamed up with Earth Hour to produce the global pheno- menon Switch Off and Dance.

Local conservation group Environs Kimberley and dance instructor Justine De Bruyn have partnered with WWF Australia to host their own Broome event.

No Lights No Lycra is a dance community that started in Melbourne in 2009 as a way to encourage people to move freely and expressively in the dark without fear of judgment.

Mrs De Bruyn said everyone was welcome to come along to the event, regardless of their dancing experience, and enjoy moving to music while supporting an important cause.

The evening kicks off at 7.30pm at Lotteries House and will feature a screening of an Earth Hour documentary, as well as inspiring talks from locals involved in sustainable food production, including Bruno Dann.

Then at 8.30pm, the lights will go out for an hour and the dancing will begin.

Guests are encouraged to bring a chair, candles, solar light and comfortable shoes.

A dinner, inspired by Broome's own Incredible Edible group, will also be held and participants are encouraged to bring a plate of food to share.
