Gina Rinehart has christened the inaugural fleet of Roy Hill locomotives in preparation for exports from the $10 billion iron ore project to start in September.

In Port Hedland for the mile- stone yesterday, Ms Rinehart named the first locomotive Ginny, after her daughter, Ginia.

Once operational, about five trains will travel the 115km from the mine north of Newman to the port each day. Each train will carry about 32,000 tonnes of iron ore in 232 carriages.

Yesterday's ceremony was a major milestone for Ms Rinehart, who originally pegged the now Roy Hill mining tenement in 1992.

"Getting Roy Hill to where it is today has taken enormous persistence, perseverance and hard work, not to mention considerable financial risk," Ms Rinehart said.

"For instance, on the government approvals, we've had to deal with over 4000 of them - approvals, permits, licences.

"These add a lot of time, a lot of expense, a lot of risk to the project but we've managed to get through all those."
