Cowboys take footy carnival undefeated

Halls Creek Cowboys have claimed the Docker's Shield Football Competition after going through the entire day of competition undefeated.

Teams from eight schools took part in the event, including Warmun, Kalumburu, Wyndham District High School, St Joseph's Wyndham, Kununurra District High School, St Joseph's Kununurra, Doon Doon and Halls Creek.

The Year 4, 5 and 6 boys and girls played five shortened games of football each across the day, with Halls Creek coming out on top.

In total, more than 150 students took part in the carnival, held at Wyndham District High School oval, which was umpired, coached and scored by staff from Garnduwa and the schools.

Garnduwa East Kimberley program manager Leah Allen said overall, the carnival had been a fantastic day and encouraged the children to get involved and have a go at sport. "It's definitely about participating more than winning and that's really obvious because when they are playing the games they are actually being coached and encouraged from the sidelines and it's not too serious," she said.

"It also gives a chance for those remote communities like Doon Doon, Warmun and Kalumburu to come in and play against the bigger towns, which they rarely get to do.

"For Kalumburu to charter a flight and bring down 15 or so kids, it's a pretty big deal for them."

Ms Allen said there was plenty of talent on show across the day, particularly from some of the girls that took part.

"Some of the girls really shone, St Joseph's Kununurra had quite a few girls on their side as did a few of the other teams and they were equally as competitive."

The competition is run in each region of the Kimberley as part of Garnduwa's partnership with the WA Football Commission.
