Four martial artists from Broome will take part in an elite competition in Melbourne next weekend attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Arnold Classic will be hosted at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from Friday, March 13, to Sunday, March 15, with an array of combat sports and other activities taking place.

ATI Martial Arts Broome practitioners Tristan Johnston, Kris Young, Adam Selby and Adrian Malkovic will take part in the competition, which is being held in Australia for the first time.

With the winners of each division given the opportunity to meet the former politican and movie star, there is added incentive for the Kimberley fighters. Johnston will compete in six taekwondo disciplines while Selby is set for his first mixed martial arts bout and will participate in jujitsu.

Young and Malkovic will also compete in the jujitsu discipline.

Johnston confirmed the quartet had been building up their cardiovascular fitness, strength and technique in advance of the events.

He said international competitors were expected and each discipline would be run by the heads of their respective sporting bodies.

Young, the group's local jujitsu instructor, said it was an excellent opportunity to upskill.

"For us being based in a remote location, it gives us a great chance to test our standard against metropolitan opponents at a national level," he said. "It is also a really good opportunity for us to be exposed to new ideas and concepts while we are there."
