Competitors to face touch challenge at Harding Dam

The Red Dog Relay's off-road, four-wheel-drive challenge will take a different turn this year, with the 160km route detouring behind the picturesque Harding Dam.

Challengers will need to lock in their hubs to cover the tough-going 69km red dirt track from Harding Dam to Python Pool.

A favourite with local four-wheel-drive enthusiasts, the track will take challengers into the heart of the rugged, remote Pilbara region.

Red Dog Relay event director Peter Kay said this year's 4WD leg would test the skills of everyone getting behind the wheel. "Highlights include a windshield tour of the traditional lands of local Aboriginal people, exploring historic pastoral lands and there's even a heritage stone bridge crossing," he said.

"Depending on weather conditions, our drivers may even be faced with a couple of water crossings."

Challengers will cross the finish line on the Roebourne-Wittenoom Road near the rail crossing just after the Python Pool turn off, Mr Kay said.

Four to Six team members are required to complete the 4WD leg, with transition points at Cossack, Harding Dam and Python Pool.
