Not just a 'bush clinic'

Mawarnkarra Health Service in Roebourne has gained top honours from Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited, one of the nation's leading accreditation providers.

The accreditation requires health services to pass strict tests based on the quality of their service and safety of their practice.

AGPAL chairman Richard Choong said the accreditation was another step towards excellence for the Roebourne-based health service.

"Achieving accreditation is a major achievement for any practice and it is a clear demonstration that Mawarnkarra Health Service is seeking to improve their level of service to both patients and the community," he said.

Mr Choong said practice teams had to work for one year to implement Royal Australian College of General Practitioners standards for general practices to achieve the honour.

Mawarnkarra chief executive Joan Hicks said to pass first time round was rare for clinics anywhere in WA.

"It is something we wanted to work towards for our clinic. We have a clinic that is doing a good job for the community," she said.

"It's very important for people to come here and know that we're accredited, we're not just a little clinic out in the bush."

Mawarnkarra chairwoman Phyllis Simmons said the service had been a "huge" step up for the Roebourne community.
