New group flies flag for sexual diversity

A group of Broome residents is aiming to promote the Kimberley as a GLBTI-friendly tourist destination.

Broome Pride was established last year by locals who want to promote an inclusive atmosphere for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex community.

The group became an incor- porated association in September.

Chairwoman Lucy Falcocchio said Broome Pride was born from a small group of people with a vision to create an organisation that would socially connect local GLBTI community members with each other as well as Pride members throughout Australia and around the world. "Broome Pride is an 'inclusive' social organisation and we encourage participation in all Broome Pride events from all community members," she said.

"The main message we want to promote is 'no matter who you are … no matter what you do … do it with pride.

"It's about feeling comfortable in your own skin."

The group will hold its first annual general meeting at 7.30pm at the Mercure on March 18 to elect the inaugural permanent board.

In the meantime, Ms Falcocchio said members were planning to work on future events, including holding a Pride Week in the Kimberley involving local businesses to build an annual event and help promote tourism in the region at the same time.

She said the association was also putting together an annual calendar of Broome Pride social events for members and the wider community.

Broome Pride will be supporters of the Mardi Gras event hosted by Skylla Lounge Bar this Saturday, featuring live entertainment from Crystal Aqua' Di.
