Shutterbug aims for the night sky

From pristine starscapes and lightning snaps to ore trains rolling through the landscape and remote towns all with their unique traits, there is no shortage of opportunities for keen shutterbugs in the Pilbara.

Newman resident of four years Kevin Mitchell took up photography after a trip to Broome two years ago.

"While we were up there I had my birthday so the wife got me a trip with Red Dirt Photography," he said.

"It was an amazing experience but at the end he taught us a bit of night photography and my battery actually went flat.

"I was just devastated, watching all these people enjoy it. So not really getting the chance to do that shook me up and I just practised and practised and that's why I'm right into my night shots now."

Mr Mitchell's devotion has paid off too, having recently won a trip to the Karijini Experience to take part in the Cathy Finch workshop. "I took a pic of 'old mate (the Milky Way) up there' at Karijini and won the trip to get back down there so I am absolutely stoked," he said.

"What I like most about photography is that you're actually out there and making memories."

Mr Mitchell said it was pleasing to get some recognition, as it was usually photographers visiting from Perth who received the accolades.
