Kings had right stuff to take out Nuff of the Puff

Kings player Lyndon Brandy prepares to shoot.

Kings were crowned champions of the Kununurra Nuff of the Puff men's basketball competition on Wednesday night after taking out Colts 35-33.

Colts were up 15-11 at half-time and looked set to make it.

But strong gameplay by Butchy Cox helped Kings take a short lead in the final stages.

Best on court for Colts was David Davies.

Before the final, the two teams were first and second on the ladder respectively with their first encounter earlier in the season ending in a draw.

It is the second time the competition has run and this year it attracted more than 50 players and six teams.

Organised by Garnduwa and Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service Council, the competition is part of the Nuff of the Puff campaign which promotes quitting smoking in favour of a healthy lifestyle.

Garnduwa Smarter than Smoking active community co-ordinator Deon Cox said the competition would start again in October and run until February to give the football players some off-season conditioning and competition.

"The plan is to start back up when the local footy season is finished, because most players also play in the EKFL," he said.

Mr Cox said after a short break over Christmas and New Year, the Regulators, Kings, Rangers, Colts, Tryers and Wild Cats were keen to get back on the court and display their hoop skills.
