Ladies' club in the pink

Team captains Mary Anne Mullane and Jo Roberts get ready to contest the second annual Pink Stumps Day cricket match in Broome.

Broome Ladies' Cricket Club hosted the annual Pink Stumps Day cricket match on Saturday, with the event a wholehearted success.

The game was staged to increase the presence of women's cricket locally, while raising awareness of breast cancer and funds for the McGrath Foundation.

The Ooh Ahs and Stumpers contested the clash at Roebuck Primary School oval, with the hard work undertaken in training since the turn of the year on show.

Ooh Ahs triumphed in an entertaining encounter, finishing with an eventual winning run haul of 3-137.

Stumpers were all out for 98 in their run chase, but showed fighting spirit and some positive play in defeat.

Mikka Poelina was the pick of the day's batters, ramping up a total of 37 that included four sixes.

Hayley Haas and Helen Dorsett-Bain were the pick of the winning side's batters.

Mel Knox, Lyn Wilson and Jo Roberts all bowled well.

Club president Tammara Olds said the dedication to training and number of participants was very encouraging.

"The ladies' skill levels have improved considerably over the past year and we are really enjoying playing at this increased skill level, while still catering for beginners," she said.

"A few girls played their first ever game after only a handful of training sessions and really stood out on Saturday.

"The ladies got out there and had a really good crack at some good cricket while raising money for a great cause."

Both umpire Scott Alexander and coach Dan McInnes were full of praise for the quality on show.

Broome's ladies are preparing to host an invitational match against their Derby counterparts on International Women's Day on Saturday, March 7.

Training continues every Wednesday at 4.30pm at Roebuck Primary oval.
