Liquor store aims high

The store's proposed location on Coolibah Drive.

A new bottle shop proposed for Kununurra will target up- market shoppers and offer a range of premium products and services not currently available.

The proposed Liquor Barons outlet is seeking approval from the director of Liquor Licensing and would be located on the corner of Coolibah Drive and Paupana Street.

Applicant Tony Martin said he was planning to move to Kununurra to manage the store with a close friend who was already a resident in town.

Mr Martin said the browse-style outlet would be socially responsible and cater to those who appreciated fine wine and boutique beers as well as sell cheeses, oils and chutneys.

"While drive-through facilities are popular with some people, there are others who prefer the comfortable surrounds of a browse store," he said.

"The focus will be meeting customer requirements and expectations with well-presented, knowledgeable staff."

The move comes five months after Liquorland Kununurra closed its doors, leaving Hotel Kununurra and Gulliver's Tavern as the only outlets where the public could purchase takeaway alcohol.

Mr Martin said they had spoken to hundreds of local residents in an effort to gain support for the proposal, even sending out information packs that included details of their plans.

He said they were also supportive of the scanning system proposed by the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, which limits liquor purchases through the various outlets in town.

"The vast majority of people in WA drink very responsibly, and should be able to access their liquor requirements safely and comfortably," he said.

Shire acting chief executive Louise Gee said the proposed store would have to meet the Shire's planning and environmental health approvals process and would be going before the council soon.

"Council will consider the application according to the broad objectives of the scheme, which includes having regard to the orderly and proper planning of the locality and the preservation of the amenity of the locality," she said.

"It may also determine whether the proposed use may be consistent with the objectives and purpose of the particular zone, which is town centre."
