Panthers seal one-point win under pressure

Beavers' Brooke Short shoots against Time Out.

For the second time in three weeks the difference between winning and losing came down to the free-throw line for the Panthers in women's B-grade basketball action in Karratha.

Last time it was Pip Abbott who drew her team level on the buzzer only to miss the bonus point at the charity stripe.

This time it was guard Ashley Langford who went to the line with the game against Flyers Red all tied up at 21 points each.

Langford had four points for the match to that point and missed the first free throw just to add a bit more pressure. She made the second to get the Panthers across the line in the see-saw contest 22-21.

It all looked to be going Flyers way in the early sets as key forward Tara Newnham went to work in the post dominating with her skill and deft touch around the basket. Newnham was the highest overall scorer with 12.

Flyers' Kate Cranston (six points) was in the zone and a scoring threat not to be left open at mid-range and Tepi Smith added to the score with three points of her own.

Panthers stayed in the game with timely baskets from contributors Sarah Boagey (four points) and speedster Kerryn Eckersley (six points), and increased defensive pressure in the second helped them secure the win.

Despite an eight-point onslaught by Beavers player Brooke Short, her side fell by a single point to Timeout in one of the other women's B-grade games, 13-12.

In the men's B-grade, Nickol Nomads ended a slump with a 38-20 routing of Smoked Trouts.

Rangi Noble was a strong presence in the paint for the Nomads with 10 points while Todd McPartlan (eight points) and Nathan Baker (seven points) played strong roles in support.

Vipers pipped Roebourne Majik 44-41 in a close match-up.

In the women's A-grade, Falcons tied with Just Us 18-all.

In the men's A-grade, Mayuga Majik beat Coral Trouts 52-34 on the back of a monster game from Beau Alec who scored 23 points.

There's no basketball on this week at the Karratha Leisureplex with country week matches taking place in Perth.
