The first night of the year for a successful basketball program had a record number of attendees.

The SLAM basketball program returned for 2015 on a new night with 50 young people turning up to the JD Hardie Youth Zone for the free event.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett was delighted by the ever-growing popularity of the program.

"Last year, SLAM was a huge success with our youth - it provides a regular weeknight recreational activity, development opportunities, a chance for some friendly competition on the basketball courts and a free healthy meal," she said.

"We are trialling the fortnightly event on Thursday's this year and feedback thus far has been positive."

The next SLAM event will take place tomorrow night from 5 to 8pm, with organisers putting a call-out for old and unwanted sports shoes.

Shoes will be given to children, youth and families in need, who can utilise them at the Slam program if they have no shoes.

Brightly decorated donation boxes are located at the JD Hardie Youth Zone and at Wirraka Maya Wellbeing Centre.

SLAM will run for a total of 10 sessions, every second Thursday from 5 to 8pm.
