Competition for a cause

Team Jelly Legs Anna Weier, Tobi Farquhar, Amber Briggs, Alice Kelly and Gemma Hayley, will be hosting a mixed netball fundraiser this weekend.

Kununurra will host a "king of the court" netball competition this weekend, which will double as a charity fundraiser for the Gibb Challenge.

Team Jelly Legs will ride this year's gruelling event in May but will first raise as much money as they can for the Kyle Andrews Foundation, which supports Kimberley children with cancer.

Team members Alice Kelly, Tobi Farquhar, Gemma Hayley, Anna Weier and Amber Briggs, who are all involved in the local netball competition, said they were aiming to raise $1000 at the event.

"We had thought of a bikini car wash but then realised a mixed netball competition would appeal to more people and hopefully attract a big crowd," Briggs said.

"Anyone is welcome to get a team together and come on down for the competition, hopefully it will be a lot of fun."

The structure of the knockout competition will depend on how many teams register for the event, but Kelly said it would be focused more on fun rather than fierce competition.

"We got the idea from Annie Pay from the netball association and we thought it would be popular because there are so many people in town who play mixed netball," she said.

"There is also no wet season competition this year, so no one is playing right at the moment and we thought a few people would hopefully be keen to play."

Farquhar said they were considering saddling up on their bikes while umpiring and co-ordinating for a bit of extra practice.

"I think I'll be riding around - it's just quicker to get from here to there," she joked. "But seriously, the bikes will be here and the displays will be up, so hopefully heaps of people come down and check it out."

Hayley said registration was $15 a person but extra donations were welcome on the night.

She said the round-robin knockout competition would start at about 5.30pm at Kununurra Netball Courts, with teams recommended to consist of at least seven or eight players.

Weier said the girls were proud to be supporting the charity which focused on assisting Kimberley kids in Perth for cancer treatment.

There will also be a sausage sizzle and other events on the night.
