Club celebrates foundation with convoy to Point Samson

Holden and Ford drivers laid down their arms to join each other, among a wide array of vehicles, for the drive.

The North West Coastal Highway came to life on Sunday afternoon as more than 70 Pilbara car enthusiasts convoyed from Karratha to Point Samson.

The newly formed Norwest Car Club met up with drivers from Wickham and the Port Hedland Car Club in Karratha to give everyone a chance to ogle a car park full of polished V8s, classics, four-wheel-drives and customised imports of all makes and models.

NWCC founder Sam Malzard said the idea to start a club in Karratha came after talking to a friend about not getting their cars out.

"Our first run we had four people turn up so I was like yeah there's cars here, there's people interested in it so let's do it," she said.

"It's astounding how many people have something that's been hidden away in their garage. As a kid my grandfather used to race the Holden Torana every weekend at the track and he always said to me, 'if you're going to die in a car, make it a car worth dying in'."

The car club has had a quick rise from its social media origins late last year, with 20 members already on the books at the start of the run.

"I thought we would get maybe five to 10 people originally, so that is a lot more than I anticipated," she said.

Malzard said besides regular car runs, the club hoped to hold events to raise money for local charities and promote local businesses.
