Annual Century Ride grows in popularity

More than 70 local cycling enthusiasts braved the wet season heat earlier this month to complete the annual Century Ride.

Organised by the Red Dirt Riders club, the event attracted hardened cyclists and newcomers for a social ride on February 8.

The route started at Cable Beach Club, with competitors heading out on Broome Road and taking in Coconut Wells and cycling past 12 Mile and back.

Red Dirt Riders vice-president Moe Cusack was quick to thank volunteers and said the meet was an overwhelming success.

"It was great to see increased numbers this year with a nice blend of familiar faces and new people," he said.

"The ride also helped to promote cycling locally and shows that it is getting more popular in Broome."

Several inexperienced riders completed 40-60km of the course or worked in teams, setting new personal records in the process.

Others used the Century Ride as part of their training for the Gibb Challenge, which sees teams of cyclists take on the gruelling week-long ordeal from Derby to El Questro.

Cusack also confirmed the Cable Beach Sprint would go ahead this year as a precursor to the Gibb Challenge.

Meanwhile, a fundraising cycle will take place in October to raise money for breast cancer research.

The Red Dirt Riders hold meetings on Saturday afternoons and have several night gatherings.
