Ladies to lose long locks for foundation

Yari Chinchilla will soon say goodbye to her hair.

Two local ladies will lop off their luscious locks next month for the World's Greatest Shave to help fund leukaemia research.

Venezuelan-born Karratha resident Yari Chinchilla has raised $1000 of her $5000 target in a matter of weeks.

Ms Chinchilla said she had a personal motivation after losing a loved one to leukaemia.

"I am shaving my hair because my little niece, Andreina, she was 10 years old and she passed away because of leukaemia," she said.

"When I remember her fighting against leukaemia she always had a big smile, she was dancing and fighting - you know, that touched my heart.

"Now that I have moved to Australia, why not help to raise money?"

Ten-year-old Wickham resident Keely Williams has already raised more than $2700, exceeding her original $2500 target.

"I would hate to have cancer as much as they would and I might only have a month or so and my life is gone," she said.

"So that's what made me want to raise money for those people who are suffering."

Keely said she was aware some people might tease her, but she was not deterred.

Ms Chinchilla will shave her head at the Tambrey Tavern at 7pm, March 14.
