A three-year-old child who fell unconscious after slipping into a swimming pool has been saved from drowning by the quick thinking of three Broome youngsters.

Sammy Yuto, 3, was lucky that her brother Simon Yuto, 9, Daniela Goncalves, 10, and Jodie Millroy, 11, were are at hand to come to her rescue at a family barbecue.

Young Sammy was sitting on the steps of the swimming pool before slipping and falling in, and Daniela and Jodie spotted her floating on the water in the deep end and not moving.

The pair quickly jumped into the pool and dragged an unconscious Sammy out of the pool, and Jodie said Sammy was not breathing.

Jodie and Daniela turned a prone Sammy onto her side and saw water coming out of her mouth.

After alerting adults nearby, Simon helped to perform CPR and mouth-to-mouth on his sister, who was resuscitated. Jodie said she was very scared for Sammy's safety.

"The picture is still in my mind and I think about it a lot," she said. "Everything happened so quickly and I was very scared when Sammy wasn't moving."

Sammy was rushed to Broome Hospital and kept overnight for observation after the scare.

Sammy's father Sunetr Yuto was quick to thank those who had assisted his daughter at Broome Hospital.

"The doctors had to check that she didn't have water in her lungs and gave her an X-ray," he said.

"I was very worried and they kept Sammy in the hospital overnight to make sure she was OK."

Mr Yuto said while his daughter has since made a full recovery, she was now scared of going near the water.

He also said he was indebted to the three youngsters for their heroic actions and was convinced their quick thinking had saved Sammy's life.
