Dawn service for Broome

The spirit of Anzac will come alive tomorrow when Broome marks the start of the centenary of Australia's involvement at the beginning of World War I.

The Broome RSL will again host the traditional Anzac Day dawn service at 5.45am at Bedford Park.

For the first time, veterans of the Afghanistan, East Timor and Iraq conflicts have been invited to march ahead of the traditional parade.

The late Flight Lieutenant Gus Winckel, regarded as a hero for his efforts defending the town from Japanese invasion in World War II, will be honoured during the service.

Broome RSL president John McCourt said Lt Winckel will be sadly missed by his family and Broome community members noting his bravery.

Tributes will also be paid to late Squadron Leader Manmohan Singh, who died while piloting a flying boat destroyed by the Japanese in Roebuck Bay.

A wreath will be laid in his memory by a local member of the Sikh community.

Community members are welcome to participate in the gunfire breakfast after the service.

A two-up competition will be held from noon to mid-afternoon, before RSL member proceedings.
