Talents kick goals

Broome's young soccer stars Chelsea Cortese, 15, Chris Mildenhall, 13, Darcy Thorn, 14, and Anna Mildenhall, 15, were selected for the QBE Football West development camp

Five promising young Broome soccer players are down in Perth this week making the most of an opportunity to receive elite training from Football West.

The teenagers, aged between 13 and 15, are participating in the QBE Football West Development Camp, which is a four-day program.

The sessions are for promising soccer players from regional areas that may not receive the same level of training in their home towns.

It is aimed at providing the participants with specialised coaching in the physical, mental and technical aspects of the game.

Chris Mildenhall, 13, Darcy Thorn, 14, Anna Mildenhall, 15, Chelsea Cortese, 15, and Scartisha Ningella, 15, will make the most of the program after being identified through the Broome Soccer Association's youth competition.

BSA coach Andy Chapman said the youngsters thoroughly deserved the opportunity and would hopefully come back to Broome better players as a result. "We thought that all five had the right level of ability and have shown a lot of potential," he said.

"The teenagers we sent down to the event last year all improved noticeably, with the intense training excellent for their development."

Chapman said the local youth soccer program had grown in popularity this season, with the five teenagers being sent to Perth a reflection of a thriving youth scene and a strong association.

The BSA average between 45-50 boys each Wednesday afternoon, with roughly 40 girls also attending on a weekly basis.
