Truck blaze causes Eyre Highway closure

The burnt-out truck near Eucla that closed the Eyre Highway.

Emergency services were yesterday forced to temporarily close a section of Eyre Highway near Eucla after a truck carrying chemicals caught fire on Sunday night.

A spokeswoman for police media yesterday confirmed the driver, who was initially reported to have left the scene, was assisting with inquiries as the Department of Fire and Emergency Services fought to extinguish the blaze. It is understood the truck caught fire at 11pm about 100km west of the WA border. The truck, which was positioned about 20m from the road, was carrying unknown chemicals identified as "hazardous".

A two-kilometre exclusion zone was set up on either side of the fire but the highway had been reopened by mid-afternoon yesterday.

The fire was still burning but under control at the time of going to print.

A DFES spokesman said fire fighters were monitoring the situation.
